Our Right to Grieve: Grief-Informed Recommendations and Resources for Healing-Centered & Racially-Just School Cultures
In 2022, SCRR was invited to facilitate “Right to Grieve”, a field-based program conducted in 2022 for an affinity group of educators and staff who identify as Black, Indigenous, and Educators of Color and/or People of Culture. These ten educators came together to explore racial grief and trauma, share insights, generate recommendations, and give and receive much needed support as we unearthed challenges, strengths, and opportunities for change within educational institutions.
This resource highlights the consensually offered learnings gathered from that programming. It covers grief’s racial burden, four major themes about BIPOC experiences within school contexts, five common themes related to what is missing and needed from the systems and structures that impact the experiences of BIPOC, and recommendations and rationale for how to address gaps and implement practices within a school context.
We invite you to use this resource to examine, support, and enhance how BIPOC folks are cared for in grief within your school setting and community. Utilize this tool to reflect, guide internal change, inspire personal growth and learning, and as a compilation of additional products and resources to support your network.
